County Sligo's beautiful scenery inspired many of the great writings of W.B. Yeats. Its fine variety of mountains, lakes and beaches give the visitor endless journeys of pleasure and excitement. Sligo town, the busy thriving capital of the North West has a special atmosphere, rich in culture and history with a heritage going back 6,000 years. The Ox Mountains to the west, form a background to the coastal plain, while north of Sligo town, the landscape is dominated by steep sided and flat-topped limestone hills. The loaf shaped Benbulben is Sligo's most famous mountain. West of Sligo town is the hill of Knocknarea and below is the resort of
Strandhill, with its long sandy beaches. Other excellent beaches are at Mullaghmore, Rosses Point and the resort of Enniscrone. Activities are well catered for in the area - both outdoors and indoors. Don't miss lending an ear to some traditional music, which is widely practiced locally.
